As Election Day approaches, America is faced with a historic choice between two diametrically opposed candidates: One, campaigning on a platform of strong change in the direction of the country, and the other, campaigning on a platform of slightly-more-subtle-but-still-important change in the direction of the country. However, below the surface of campaign promises, talking points, and policy debates, there lingers something sinister, something below the radar of public attention. One of these candidates bears a middle name which represents violence, hatred, and evil.

That's right. I'm talking about John Sidney McCain. The name may seem innocuous at first, but putting the name into historical context quickly reveals its dark roots.

We can begin with its etymology. Sidney is often thought to be a contraction of the French place-name Saint-Denis, which is, itself, a contraction of Dionysius. As I am sure you are all fully aware, Dionysius was the name of the morbidly obese tyrant (read: enemy of freedom) of 4th century BC Heraclea. Dionysius of Heraclea was eventually killed under the weight of his own gluttony, making a routine practice of artificially introducing food to his stomach after he could no longer consume it orally.

Even in the present Western world, Sydney has strong roots in violence and sadism. Sidney Prescott is the name of the fictional protagonist in the popular Scream trilogy, abhorrent films which brought "murder-porn" to mainstream audiences worldwide with its often "humorous" depictions of innocent people suffering gory and painful deaths. The main character, Sidney Prescott, is depicted killing numerous individuals, herself, throughout the course of the films.

Bassist of the notorious English "punk" band, Sex Pistols, forsook his Christian name of John Ritchie to take the mantle of Sid Vicious. Beyond their implied support for the use of firearms during sexual intercourse, the Sex Pistols are well known for their deeply offensive lyrics, such as in the song "Anarchy in the UK," where the Sex Pistols proudly proclaim themselves to be Antichrists and anarchists, encouraging violence, destruction, and terrorism.

It is no wonder that "John Sidney McCain" has become a popular chant at Obama rallies. The public is becoming more aware every day of the dangers this man presents to America by virtue of his middle name. While Obama has decried this rhetoric as irrelevant and is pushing to re-center the debate on matters of social policy and the failing economy, opponents to McCain remain nevertheless steadfast.

"The evidence is clear," said a man we spoke to at a recent Obama rally in Las Vegas, Nevada. "John Sidney McCain is an enemy of freedom, and condones violence, murder, anarchy and terrorism. Maybe Obama doesn't want this movement to rise to the forefront of the political discussion, but it's an important issue, and we're very passionate about it, and we're not going to shut up."

Wow, I have no idea why I just wrote this. Oh well, hope it's worth a chuckle or two.

Ha, this gets a vote from me. It beautifully capitalizes the fact that a middle name really doesn't mean anything regarding a person's character or beliefs.
